Token Airdrop Weekly Intelligence — Week of September 21 – 27, 2026
This column answers the same five questions every week so that patterns become visible across weeks instead of inside them. The questions do not change; the answers are supposed to. This week the pattern that moved was structural, not volumetric: a price-gated airdrop completed its first full cycle, and a supply week arrived that made every claim-side number look small.
1. Market: how active was the airdrop market last week?
Quiet where airdrops happen, loud where they don't. Two events completed: NEAR@3.33's Drop 1 conversion (333,333 milestone tokens, September 21) and Binance Alpha's third Cysic round (180 CYS per eligible claim, September 23). One new exchange campaign launched — Binance's RLUSD-to-XRP hold-to-earn program, $800,000 in XRP across four weekly payouts starting October 2. One project published a new confirmed allocation — Variational's 32%-of-supply genesis airdrop ahead of a Q4 2026 TGE. And the week's largest numbers were all unlocks: roughly $158 million in XPL alone on September 25, in a release week spanning at least eight named tokens. Activity did not disappear; it changed departments — from distribution to supply.
2. Live & upcoming: what is open now and what is closing soon?
Open now: the Sonic (S) claim, running to its October 15 hard close with approximately 32.69 million unclaimed season-1 and season-2 tokens becoming contract-burnable afterwards; Grass stage 2 (paid in USDC, not GRASS) to January 22, 2027; and the undated trio — Plume Season 2, GRVT tranches, dappOS Phase 2 — unchanged for a fifth week. Closing soon: City Protocol's TGE on September 28 (airdrop and listing status unpublished); Kraken's liquidation of unclaimed Beldex/Humanity balances, September 28 – October 2; the fourth and final WLFI distribution on October 2; the Ethos WHUF 30-day lockup ending October 8; InterLink's first-10-million claim on October 12. Newly confirmed but undated: Variational's $VAR genesis airdrop, TGE in Q4 2026.
3. Eligibility: what changed in rules and snapshots?
Three rule changes worth holding onto. First, the Alpha threshold: CYS's third round opened at 250 points on September 23 — the series high — after last week's 240/235, with the standing mechanics intact (5-point decay per 5 minutes, 15-point claim cost). Second, Variational published its genesis eligibility in full: tokens proportional to held points, a minimum of one point, a signed $VAR terms of service, fully unlocked at TGE, unclaimed portions burned, and — critically for farmers — the points program extended past its announced Q3 end, with 150,000 points per week continuing until TGE. Third, Binance's RLUSD campaign defined eligibility by account class (Spot, Funding, Earn, Margin, minimum 0.01 RLUSD) with hourly lowest-balance snapshots and 1.2×/1.1× multipliers stacking to 1.3×, plus a 60% haircut on margin-borrowed RLUSD. NEAR's completed design also belongs in this section retrospectively: dual gates (a $100+ confidential balance at snapshot and a swap history) plus a 2% per-wallet cap.
4. Post-airdrop: how did distributed or unlocked tokens perform?
The week's cleanest post-event data point is SOON: it closed down 1.68% at $0.194 on its September 23 unlock day (20.24 million tokens, 3.62% of circulating supply), per CoinMarketCap's analysis, which attributes part of the move to the unlock and part to a market-wide dip with Bitcoin down 2.63% amid rising Treasury yields. NEAR converted its Drop 1 with spot roughly 25% above the $3.33 conversion trigger — the mechanism executed in its easy case. For XPL, the week's dominant supply event, post-cliff behavior was not yet measurable in our sources at the weekly cutoff; the cliff landed September 25 and meaningful recipient-behavior data takes days to accumulate. One contextual datum from the week's tape: CoinDCX noted NEAR's TVL fell 5.24% to $179.62 million with $3.36 million in net outflows even as its price climbed — price and usage separating in both directions across different assets.
5. Outlook: what should you watch next week?
Five dated items carry into the September 28 – October 4 window, in descending order of hardness. First, the Kraken liquidation (September 28 – October 2) — no action possible, only consequences. Second, the fourth and final WLFI distribution on October 2 — the last scheduled test of whether this campaign ever publishes a value. Third, City Protocol's TGE on September 28 — with the explicit caveat that a TGE is not automatically a listing or a distribution; we will log whichever it turns out to be. Fourth, the Ethos WHUF lockup ending October 8, the first measurable unlock of auction-purchased tokens. Fifth, the Sonic countdown — October 15 is now under three weeks out, and it is contract-enforced. Undated but active: Variational's Q4 TGE and its weekly 150,000-point drip; the RLUSD campaign's first Friday payout on October 2.
6. Signals vs. noise this week
| Item | Signal or noise — and why | How to misuse it |
|---|---|---|
| NEAR@3.33 Drop 1 conversion | Signal — a new airdrop design completed a full cycle; the price-gated conversion is a template other projects can copy | Extrapolating one 333,333-token drop into "airdrops are now price-pegged market-wide" |
| 250-point CYS threshold | Signal — the series' high one week after its first decline; the uptrend survived a falsification attempt | Reading the single-week rebound as "thresholds will never fall" (the mirror error of last week's) |
| Variational's 32% genesis allocation | Signal — a published, fully-unlocked community percentage with explicit burn and lockup terms | Treating "32%" as a value before a TGE date, valuation, or claim mechanics exist |
| The $158M XPL unlock | Signal — the week's dominant supply event, with a known recipient split | Quoting either tracker's percentage (63.20% or 97.44%) without naming the denominator |
| Sonic's October 15 contract burn | Signal — hard, mechanism-enforced, with a printed date and a published amount (32.69M S) | Assuming an extension is possible; the contract removes discretion |
| Grass stage 2 "USDC not GRASS" correction | Signal — an official denomination clarification that re-prices every pending expectation | Continuing to quote stage 2 as a "GRASS airdrop" in lists and calculators |
| "$900M unlock week" headlines | Noise — one source's headline does not reconcile with its own percentages ($159.91M at 63.2% implies ~$253M) | Citing the week total in a report without checking it against the per-event rows |
| Third WLFI distribution with no value | Noise as an event, signal as a pattern — three dates, zero published values is reporting structure, not news | Predicting October 2 "must" publish; the pattern so far is the base rate, not a countdown |
| Margex's $2.7M ETH trading campaign (Sep 22) | Noise — a volume-based exchange promotion, paid from trading activity, not a protocol distribution | Logging it in a protocol-claim count to inflate the week's activity |
| Gate's LAPTOP memecoin campaign (Sep 22) | Noise — a memecoin listing promotion with candy-task rewards on a CEX | Treating a trading-task pool as an airdrop and summing it into market totals |
