Airdrop Market Report — September 2026

This is the monthly companion to our weekly calendar & tracker report (Airdrop Calendar & Tracker — September 21–27, 2026). It covers the token airdrop market across September 1–30, 2026 only; events dated October 1 or later — including the NEAR Intents exploit and the renewed USD1 campaign — are excluded and covered in the September 28 – October 4 weekly issue. As with the August baseline: no invented numbers, no estimated totals — every figure names its source. This is also the second monthly report, which means the first month-over-month comparisons appear in Section 5.

1. September at a Glance

September was the month the market's newest distribution design went live and its oldest supply event got stress-tested. A price-gated airdrop completed its first full cycle (NEAR@3.33: snapshot September 15, conversion September 21, 333,333 milestone tokens). The largest unlock cluster this tracker has measured landed between September 22 and 26, led by Plasma's 1.76 billion XPL — roughly 63% of then-circulating supply — and the market absorbed it without a collapse. The deadline deficit did not move: 2 of 6 tracked live claims had printed end dates at month's end, exactly August's ratio. And the exchange reward layer kept compounding: Binance's USD1 campaign ran its full September arc without once publishing a per-distribution value.

2. September Week by Week

Every row below is a figure already published and source-attributed in the corresponding weekly report; this table is a month-level index, not new reporting.

WeekVerified events of record
Sep 1–6Ethos WHUF auction bidding ran Sep 1–4 (closed Sep 8: $8.4M, 1,560 participants, $4.20 clearing price); NEAR closed $1.8880 on Sep 2 — the starting point of the month's +183% move (Investing.com/Binance closes)
Sep 7–13Binance Alpha round opened at 246 points (Sep 10); WLFI campaign's first distribution (Sep 11) carried no published value; NEAR's Sep 15 snapshot window approached as price climbed toward the $3.33 VWAP gate
Sep 14–20Circle's Arc public mainnet launched Sep 16 with fees in USDC and no native token; APM round opened at 235 points (Sep 17); Sei unlocked ~111.5M tokens mid-month; KiiChain Alpha competition (1,250,000 KII) ran from Sep 18
Sep 21–27NEAR@3.33 Drop 1 converted Sep 21 (333,333 tokens); CYS round opened at 250 (Sep 23); RLUSD-to-XRP campaign announced Sep 24 ($800,000); the month's unlock cluster landed Sep 22–26, led by XPL's 1.76B tokens (~63% of then-circulating supply) on Sep 25; WLFI's third distribution (Sep 25) again had no published value
Sep 28–30Ethos hard-coded its Oct 8 unlock timestamp on-chain (Sep 28 upgrade, 1,425 frozen wallets); Bitwise's NRR — the first US spot NEAR ETF — began trading Sep 29; Concrete's CT TGE executed Sep 30 with the 223-point Alpha round; NEAR closed the month at $5.3410

Read as a sequence, the month has a shape: an auction first (Ethos, Sep 1–8), a price gate converting mid-month (NEAR, Sep 21), the heaviest supply week at the three-quarter mark (Sep 22–26), and an institutional arrival at the close (the ETF, Sep 29). The event types barely overlap — which is why September could set a record in four different categories at once without any single week feeling crowded until the final one.

4. The Exchange Reward Layer

As in August, the largest confirmed dollar pools ran through exchanges. These reward platform activity — volume, lockups, balances — rather than protocol usage, and their pools are fixed and pre-announced.

PlatformPoolWindow (within/overlapping September)Source
Binance — USD1/WLFI150M WLFI campaign; three September distributions (Sep 11, 18, 25) carried no published value — a fourth was dated October 2, outside this report's window (see the Sep 28 – Oct 4 weekly issue)Sep 4 – Oct 2Binance
Binance — RLUSD campaign$800,000 in XRPSep 25 – Oct 23 (announced Sep 24)Binance

Binance Alpha — KiiChain competition1,250,000 KII to the top 2,000 by KII buy volumeSep 18 – Sep 25Binance

The structural note from August still holds, with one aggravation: the USD1 campaign ran its entire September arc — all three September distributions (Sep 11, 18, 25) — without publishing a single per-distribution value. A fourth distribution was dated October 2, outside this report's window and covered in the September 28 – October 4 weekly issue; by the campaign's established pattern it is expected to have closed without a published value as well.

5. What Changed During September

  • Price gates went from theory to record. NEAR@3.33's two-gate design (a $70M TVL usage gate and a three-day VWAP price gate) completed the first measured cycle. The trigger held through a +183% month computed from Sep 2 to Sep 30 closes — and the design's post-September resilience is examined in this week's case study (dated in the following week's issue).
  • The threshold series got its first rally-and-drop. After climbing 180 → 250 across late August and September, the Concrete round opened at 223 on September 30 — a 27-point single-round drop, the largest in the tracked series.
  • A 63%-of-supply unlock was absorbed. XPL rose into its September 25 unlock and gave back 3.75% by September 26 — no collapse, with the monthly schedule (next tranche October 25) now the standing test.
  • Eligibility mechanics hardened. Ethos hard-codes its October 8 unlock timestamp on-chain (September 28 upgrade) with a frozen, auditable lock list of 1,425 wallets; Binance's renewed USD1 campaign (October 2, outside this month's window) gates its 1.2× boost behind a 300 USD1 daily open-interest minimum.
  • TGE slippage persisted. City Protocol's September 28 TGE — scheduled in trackers under a CT ticker — has no accessible confirmation of execution, and its own documentation calls the token $CIT (10B supply; 17.9% TGE unlock). Concrete, the other CT, executed cleanly on September 30.

6. Structural Observations — and the First Month-over-Month

The deadline deficit is unchanged, but its composition moved. August closed with 2 of 6 (Grass, Jan 22, 2027; Midnight, Dec 4, 2026, per the Week 35 tracker). September closed with 2 of 6 again (Sonic, Oct 15; Grass). Midnight's row left the tracked set; Sonic's burn entered it. The ratio's stability across two months is itself the finding: roughly two-thirds of tracked live claims still have no printed end date, and closure risk still sits with the claimant.

The value gap is becoming a genre. In August the WLFI campaign had published no per-distribution values; September extended the streak to three distributions from three (Sep 11, 18, 25), and a fourth distribution dated October 2 fell outside this report's window (covered in the September 28 – October 4 weekly issue). Add the campaign-level measurement disputes this month — XPL's unlock value printed three ways ($158M / $144–198M / ~$160M on a 1.81B-token basis), and the September 28–October 4 weekly issue opens with a Kraken liquidation window printed two ways — and September's defining measurement lesson is that the market's largest numbers are the least likely to have a single authoritative value.

September produced no mega-distribution, but it produced a mega-measurement. The last benchmark remains Hyperliquid's November 2024 genesis (310M HYPE, ~94,000 wallets). What September added is the first full record of a conditional distribution: a design that could have failed its trigger and instead converted with weeks of price headroom. That record — snapshot, gates, conversion, and the price path around it — is the month's lasting dataset.

The supply side is where the two months are least comparable. August's unlock calendar this tracker tabulated was scattered; September concentrated roughly $40M of mid-cap unlocks into five days (Sep 22–26) and then put the largest single event — XPL, at ~63% of circulating supply — on top of it. August had no comparable absorption test, which is why the XPL outcome (a 3.75% giveback by the next session, against a ~68% overnight float increase) is September's most cited datapoint and cannot be chained into a trend. On the threshold series the comparison does work: August closed the tracked rounds climbing (180 → 246), September extended the climb (235 → 250) and then broke it (223) — the first series-level reversal, and the first datapoint that says operator pricing responds to week-level competition rather than only to point supply.

7. October Outlook

  • The dated claim stack. Ethos WHUF unlocks October 8 (15:00 UTC, automatic — the first hardcoded-timestamp unlock in the tracked set); InterLink closes October 12 (23:59 UTC); Sonic's contract burn executes October 15 (32.69M S); Margex ends October 16; Binance's Stage 2 terms land by October 16; RLUSD closes October 23; Grass runs to January 22, 2027.
  • The unlock wave. BeInCrypto sizes October 5–11 at roughly $1.11B (3.75M HYPE ≈ $340M to a single institutional buyer on Oct 6; 171.88M ENA ≈ $41.52M on Oct 5; 11.31M APT on Oct 11); a Tokenomist snapshot sizes October at over $1.9B across 32 releases — both printed, neither averaged. XPL's next tranche lands October 25.
  • The value-gap test. The renewed USD1 campaign's terms say weekly effective APRs will be updated in the announcement after each distribution. October is the month to check whether that mechanism finally produces a published value.
  • City Protocol ($CIT). Any listing or distribution announcement should be checked against the project's own documentation — 10B fixed supply, 17.9% TGE unlock — and against the CT ticker collision with Concrete.
  • NEAR's next move. No official Drop 2 date or trigger exists. If the unconfirmed $6.66 figure ever becomes official, the price headroom that defined September's record halves to zero at the trigger by construction.
Methodology and limitations. This report covers September 1–30, 2026 only; events dated October 1 or later are excluded and covered in the weekly issue for September 28 – October 4. No whitelisted source publishes a market-wide "total value distributed," so none is given; sums of heterogeneous estimates would look precise while being wrong. Unlock values are tracker estimates; where trackers disagree, both values appear and neither is averaged. Month-over-month comparisons are made only where the underlying tracked set and its changes are documented. Nothing here is financial advice.

FAQ

What defined the airdrop market in September 2026?

Three things: the first completed price-gated airdrop cycle (NEAR's 333,333 milestone tokens converting after a three-day VWAP held at or above $3.33), the largest unlock cluster this tracker has measured (led by Plasma's 1.76 billion XPL — about 63% of then-circulating supply), and a deadline deficit that did not move: 2 of 6 tracked live claims carried printed end dates at month's end, the same ratio August closed with.

Did any large airdrop actually distribute in September 2026?

No completed mega-distribution with a published size occurred. The month's largest measured distribution event was campaign-sized: Ethos's $8.4 million auction (1,560 participants, $4.20 clearing price), whose tokens remain locked until October 8. The unlock wave released supply, but unlocks are vesting events, not distributions to new recipients.

What is the month-over-month change in the deadline deficit?

The ratio is unchanged at 2 of 6, but the composition changed: August's two dated rows were Grass (Jan 22, 2027) and Midnight (Dec 4, 2026, per the Week 35 tracker); September's are Sonic (Oct 15) and Grass. Midnight's row left the tracked set, and Sonic's burn entered it.

Why doesn't this report give a total dollar value distributed in September?

Because no whitelisted source publishes that aggregate, and we do not construct totals from heterogeneous estimates. The same rule applied to August; every figure here is traceable to its stated source.

How did the market absorb Plasma's 63% supply unlock?

Without a collapse. XPL rose into the September 25 event (about $0.090 on Sep 23 to $0.1146 on Sep 25, per CoinGecko event-window data) and fell 3.75% to about $0.113 by September 26, per CoinMarketCap's analysis. Unlock value estimates ranged from $144–198M (Pluang) to ~$158M (PANews) — printed, not averaged.

What happened with TGE slippage in September?

City Protocol's September 28 TGE — scheduled in third-party trackers under a CT ticker — has no accessible confirmation of execution, and the project's own documentation names its token $CIT. Concrete's CT (a different project) executed cleanly on September 30 with same-day Binance Alpha, OKX and HTX listings.

Which October events matter most for claim windows?

The dated stack: Ethos WHUF unlock October 8, InterLink claim close October 12, Sonic's contract burn October 15, Margex's campaign end and Binance's Stage 2 terms on October 16, RLUSD close October 23, and the early-October unlock wave — sized at $1.11 billion for Oct 5–11 by BeInCrypto and at over $1.9 billion across October by a Tokenomist snapshot.
